The minimum viable household, on one card

Water, a way to purify more, prescriptions, a radio, light, a meetup, cash, and the shutoff valve.

by: Andrew, Co-Founder at Blackout Briefing

If you do nothing else after reading this paper, do this: store water for three days and a way to treat more; refill prescriptions early once; put a radio and batteries where you can find them; write a meetup point; keep small cash; find the water shutoff. That list is not maximal. It is the list that changes outcomes.

The order follows the failures that do not wait for a better plan. Thirst does not. Medicines run out on a calendar you already know. The radio is how you learn whether the dark is a block or a region. The meetup is how the people outside the room find you. Cash is for a register that cannot take a card. The shutoff is for water that does not know the power is out.

Three days of stored water is the pause in which you can read the treatment method, not the end of thirst. A way to treat more is what the day after that looks like if the taps are still dry. Storage without treatment is a weekend. Treatment you have never set up, and no storage, means you do the recipe while already short.

Small cash is not a theory of money. It is ordinary bills for a station or a pharmacy that is open and cannot process a card because its connections are down. If the outage is short, the bills go back in the drawer. If you never separated them, an open counter is a counter you can only look at.

Add heat or cooling for your climate next, then food you already know how to cook, then a legal generator setup if your budget allows. In that order for most families.

Climate comes before novelty food because the weather can hurt people while the pantry is still interesting. Food you already cook is food you will eat when the day is bad. A generator is last because an unapproved hookup adds a backfeed hazard to the outage, and even a legal one does not replace water you never put aside.

We will keep publishing longer explanations. The card is the edition that matters if you only keep one. Copy it onto paper and put it where the flashlight is. A list that lives in an article you cannot open in the dark has not been kept.
